The Reckoning Redux

Happy Thanksgiving Obsassenachs! This week on The Sassenach Files I chatted about the extended version of 109: The Reckoning. Join me as I discuss all of the scenes that were cut or pared down for time. A lot of groundwork was laid in this episode for the remaining storylines of the season, and I break down how the choices made in the editing room impact our understanding of the plot and character arcs moving forward. I also touch on some of the key moments in the episode for Jamie’s development and the growth of Jamie and Claire’s marriage that both myself and the showrunners consider “tent pole” moments.

Season One -- What Did We Miss?

Hey Obsassenachs! This week on The Sassenach Files I dove into some of the extras on the Season One Blu Ray / DVD to uncover what we missed with all the deleted and extended scenes. Join me as I chat about great scenes left on the cutting room floor and the impact those choices had on the trajectory of the season’s story. I also chat about background information and character motivations that were left out in the cold and could have been used to inform the viewer. I didn’t disagree with all their choices though, so I make sure to touch on that as well!

Droughtlander Book Club: The Sapphire Brooch -- Part 2

Greetings Obsassenachs! This week on a LIVE edition of The Sassenach Files, I hosted my fourth edition of Droughtlander Book Club where I discussed parts three and four of The Sapphire Brooch by Katherine Lowry Logan. Join me as I analyze some of our supporting roles including Jack Mallory, Cullen Montgomery, and David McBain. I also chat about the trial of the conspirators after the assassination of President Lincoln, the motivations of this book’s villain–Colonel Gordon Henley, and a few of the creative choices I thought were particularly inspired in these sections of the book.

Droughtlander Book Club: The Sapphire Brooch--Part 1

Welcome back Obsassenachs! This week on another LIVE edition of The Sassenach Files, I hosted my third edition of Droughtlander Book Club. I also chat about Alexander Vlahos and Caitriona Balfe’s stellar acting. along with the kinky throuple storyline that polarized the fandom this season, and Roger’s decision to become a minister. The Big One this episode is a discussion on Claire’s deteriorating mental state, how she is coping (or not), and why it took Jamie so damn long to say something.

Hey Obsassenachs! This week on The Sassenach files, I’m breaking down 606: “The World Turned Upside Down”. Come join me as I chat about the creative writing and cinematography choices that make this episode great along with why I felt this episode really needed to be split in two. I also talk about the fine line between dreams and reality in this ep, Brianna’s slow and steady growth as a character, Jamie’s choice to reveal his encounter with Mary McNab, and a quick game of connect the dots for all the little bread crumbs that have been dropped throughout the season.

The Threat of Division

Welcome back Obsassenachs! This week on The Sassenach Files I’m discussing 605: “Give Me Liberty”. Join me as I talk about Roger’s soft spot for young mothers and how that drives him towards a civil servant career path, along with the news that Bree is pregnant, and Jocasta’s true reasoning for buying Fergus that print shop. I also express my sympathy for Lord John as he once again is placed in a tight political squeeze while protecting Jamie from the ire of the crown and it’s agents. Creative production choices were also on full display this episode a la Bonnie Prince Charlie’s escape “over the sea to Skye” and the “Colonel Bogie March” in the closing moments of the episode, so stay tuned to see what I had to say about those things as well–among other things :)
